The Mixtape

Make someone happy, make them a mixtape (or more likely a cd)

According to essayist Geoffrey O’Brien the personal mixtape is “the most widely practiced American art form”, so why not join in on the fun? Make a selection of your favorite music and burn it onto a cd, then give it to someone special (as the song goes).

Discovering Books

Or how to help others discover books.

All the world’s a library,
And all the men and women merely lenders.

www.bookcrossing.com encourages you to share books with others by leaving them at a place others will find them, such as park benches and coffee shops, and registering it at their site. There you can follow the fate of your book, does it travel around the world or is it now someone else’s favorite?

Discovering Movies

Let’s say you are in a cinema and you want to see a movie, but you’re uncertain what to see. The safest bet, safest in the meaning “most likely to be of high quality”, is picking a movie from a country not very known for making movies.

This might sound strange, but think about it for just a moment, most movies from your typical movie producing countries are going to be shown, regardless of the quality. Movies from other countries is only shown when they have something that is going to put them above the rest.

Discovering Music

I’m always on the lookout for new music and the web is an excellent place for discovering just that. And by new music I mean new to me, not necessarily music from the last couple of years. Let’s say that you, just like me, like the Australian band AC/DC, here’s what you do:

go to allmusic.com and search for AC/DC, then you’re sent to an informative page telling you among other things that the band was formed in 1973, but the information we are looking for is further down on the page, under the heading “Influenced By”. Here you can see that AC/DC was influenced by, amongst others, The Who and Led Zeppelin. These bands you can hear music from on YouTube, MySpace and many other places.

Happy hunting!
